The Cutter Trust was set up in 1996. It is now part of The Glaziers’ Foundation (registered charity 1143700). Its primary objectives are:
- to help the disadvantaged of all ages in South East London by encouraging them to learn about river craft and rowing; and enjoy water sports and other activities
- to help maintain the City of London’s historic links to, and dependence on, the River Thames and our river heritage; and
- to provide leisure facilities through the ownership of a cutter on the River Thames.
Our craft, The Master Glazier, is a Thames Watermen’s Cutter which was commissioned in 1996.
It is now housed at and used by the Ahoy Centre in Deptford, which provides activities for disadvantaged young people and disabled adults through rowing and sailing. The Shipmates there who use our Cutter maintain it and gain valuable experience and skills, and can use their experience towards an NVQ. We welcome offers of support, financial donations and sponsorship for our work, especially from those who have an interest in rowing.
The Company also use the Cutter to take part in races and ceremonial occasions on the River Thames, along with some twenty similar craft sponsored by other Livery Companies. From the beginning we have found an all-female crew, but occasionally male members of the Company are allowed to have a go.
